Information Architect at the Nat. Association of Realtors (Chicago, IL)

The National Association of Realtors (NAR), the US's largest professional organization with more than one million members, is seeking a bright, creative Information Architect to help shape a new future for its Web site. This position requires excellent skills in communication, critical thinking, and relationship building. This position's primary focus over the next 12-24 months will be advancing a major redesign now underway at the Web site.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver high-level content organization and navigation, user flows, interface metaphors/approaches, page layout and content schematics.
  • Work closely with site manager, web editors, graphic designers, and developers.
  • Translate user needs into functional requirements.
  • Communicate with the organization in all stages of design to answer questions about the IA strategy.
  • Plan and participate in usability tests of web sites and applications.
  • Conduct heuristic reviews of existing web sites and applications.
  • Perform a content inventory showing all content elements, relationships and dependencies.
  • Perform competitive analysis as required.
  • Contribute ideas for improving processes and deliverables.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 years experience in information architecture/usability.
  • Solid knowledge of the principles of information architecture, usability, and web-based user experience design.
  • Ability to work with internal clients and users to understand their goals.
  • Experience observing user research and translating user research into design decisions.
  • Experience with sites that offer personalization and/or customization.
  • Experience with a CMS (preferably Plumtree).
  • Experience with Visio.
  • Experience managing usability tests.
  • A BA/BS degree.
  • Experience in organizing large websites (1000+ pages).
  • Familiarity with best practices on the Web.
  • Ability to translate usability test data into design strategy.
  • Ability to communicate with partners in the organization, and manage expectations.
  • Strong time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred (not required)

  • Experience with designing for Section 508 compliance.
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, cross-browser compatibility issues.
  • Experience with Microsoft Project and Lotus Notes.
  • Involvement with industry standards or professional organizations related to web/UI design.
  • Experience working with associations, or other membership groups.
