Bringing Usability to Life (June 8-12, 2009 - Portland, OR USA)

From Business to Buttons 2009

Design for Effect (June 11-12, 2009 - Malmö, Sweden EU)
User experience and interaction design has finally worked its way into the companies. And with the economic downturn, the challenge for us is simple but vast: create user experiences that are the difference between success and failure. It is the time for us as an industry to step in, step up and show them what the fuzz is all about. It is time to become really useful to our clients and our companies.

From Business to Buttons is the meeting place in Europe for interaction designers, business strategist and usability experts. If you want to expand your business, and become a leader in the UX field, there is no better place to get the tools and inspiration. Ours is still a small community. By coming together we become bigger and better (and perhaps even more beautiful). We believe that by sharing experiences we strengthen our profession on a global level, which is good for us all.

Interact 2009

12th IFIP TC13 Conference in Human-Computer Interaction (August 24-28, 2009 - Uppsala, Sweden EU)
The theme of the INTERACT 2009 conference, Research and Practice, addresses the issue of continuity between theory and practice in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research. The main focus is on research that is reflected in real-world applications.

The INTERACT series of conferences has been one of the driving forces in the HCI field for many years, and over time much research has been published in the INTERACT Conference proceedings. In Scandinavia, where INTERACT will be held in 2009, the HCI research tradition has always had a strong connection to working life, and the aim to produce practical assets for software design has been an important research issue. But how does research relate to practice in 2009? Are research results spreading beyond the research community and applied in practice, and are practitioners looking into research for their answers?

The relation between theory and practice is an old issue that is becoming increasingly important. Has HCI been able to contribute to better IT use in practice? Are the existing methods and tools for the design of usable systems sufficient or is there still a need for new and better processes, methods and tools for systems development? INTERACT 2009 provides a forum in which practitioners and researchers can discuss research and methods for mutual benefit.

Engaging Artifacts

August 30 - September 1, 2009 (The Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Oslo Norway)
Design research aims to provide new insights to the ways in which we understand - and do - design. The conference invites contributions from researchers in universities, design schools and industry who share an interest in understanding and developing design as a trans-disciplinary practice that is always in the making. The scope of the conference reaches beyond the traditional design disciplines and includes other research areas with mutual interest in design research and engaging artefacts. NORDES '09 directs its interest towards the diversity, challenges and emerging practices and understandings of design. The conference theme reflects a range of issues that characterize design and design research today.

DPPI 2009

Designing Pleasurable Products and Interfaces (October 13-16, 2009 - Compiègne, France)
This conference originally was driven by the need to move away from a purely functional approach to usability, and focused on a more experiential approach to human-product interaction. Now, the rationalization of the means for design and production leading to a relative standardisation of the products on the market, the sharp competition between the mature companies exhorts to take into account the aspects linked to the perceptions of the final users and to turn innovation into a more experiential approach to human-product interaction.

DeThinking Service, ReThinking Design

First Nordic Conference on Service Design and Service Innovation (November 24-26, 2009 - Oslo, Norway EU)
Design has become central to product innovation and is now starting to innovate services with the same effect. Service Design is emerging as a new design discipline, and is showing strong results in both the private and public sector.

Service Design delivers innovation through the holistic design of customer experiences that occur across touch-points and over time. It brings a different perspective to established service disciplines such as service management and service innovation, and both complements and catalyzes them.
