June 28, 2005Paul Stiff (UK)"Paul Stiff worked in graphic design and in academic publishing before joining the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication in 1980. He edited Information design journal from 1989 to 1999 and, with the journal's founding editor, Rob Waller, organised three of the first Information Design Conferences in the 1980s. In 1995 he founded the annual book-length research review of typography and graphic communication, Typography papers, and edited and produced its first two issues (1996, 1997); he returned to the editorship for the fifth issue (2003). He has been a visiting teacher at, among others, the Royal College of Art, The University of Michigan, Washington University St Louis, and Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. His research interests include typographic design methods and specification, editorial typography for complex texts, and the whole field of information design (design for reading), in particular graphic support for wayfinding and navigation."
