Interaction design
The 7th International Conference on Interaction Design and Children (June 11-13, 2008 - Chicago USA)
Each day, we interact with hundreds of technological devices that help us organize our lives, achieve our goals, and indulge in our passions. For children today, technology is especially pervasive in all aspects of life. They learn and play using computers and other technological devices; as they grow, they build and maintain friendships using computers and mobile phones; they interact with one another virtually; and even find critical interpersonal support and therapy using computers, the internet and other technology-enhanced products.

Designing Interactive Systems (February 25-27, 2008 - Cape Town, South Africa)
The Designing Interactive Systems series of conferences started in 1995 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, around the time that a very influential book was published. Terry Winograd collected together an excellent set of pioneers in this field in his book Bringing Design to Software. Since then the conference has progressed through DIS97, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; DIS2000, New York City, USA; DIS2002, London, UK; DIS2004, Boston, USA; DIS2006, State College, USA; to arrive at DIS2008, in Cape Town, South Africa.
Each of these conferences has helped to develop and shape the field by bringing together designers, software developers, and many other disciplines. DIS2008 will be the first main SIGCHI conference to be held outside the USA or Europe, and as such aims to challenge participants to reflect on designing interactive systems for users outside these established markets. This is especially relevant as these markets are fast becoming more lucrative and influential.

New Sociotechnical Insights in Interaction Design 2007 (September 10-11, 2007 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
Interaction design is becoming more challenging because of advances in technology – pervasive, ubiquitous, multimodal and adaptive – are changing the nature of interaction. The aim of this workshop is to provide a forum for HCI practitioners and specialists interested in knowledge from the social sciences to discuss how sociotechnical insights can best be used to inform interactive design and how social methods and theories can fit into changing patterns of development and participatory design. Both long papers and short papers submissions are invited, addressing key aspects of current research and practical case studies.
Diverse areas of the social sciences explore and conceptualize the relation between people, society and technology under the rubric of ‘sociotechnical’, which can bring interesting insights into interaction design. While organizational studies of technology adoption have a well defined conceptual framework known as sociotechnical systems theory with established principles, the situation is not the same for interaction design research. The latter includes examples that give diverse uses to the term ‘sociotechnical’ when involving social methods and theories. While perspectives like ethnography, ethnomethodology and activity theory have had a clear impact in the design of interactive systems, the potential contribution of other social science perspectives has not become so clear and uniform despite the increased development of the pervasive and social proxy – mediating and mediated -- characters of interactive systems.
This workshop will bring together good examples of research in interaction design that refer to the term ‘sociotechnical’. The challenge is to achieve some level of ‘translation’ despite differences between disciplines whose main interest is understanding social phenomena and disciplines whose main interest is the design of interactive systems. It is hoped the workshop will identify opportunities for a socio-technical knowledge framework in interaction design.

Pervasive Mobile Interaction Devices (May 7th, 2006: Dublin, Ireland)
"Mobile devices have become a pervasive part of our everyday lives. People have mobile phones, smartphones and PDAs which they take with them almost everywhere. So far these mobile devices have been mostly used for phone calls, writing short messages and organizer functionalities. Today we see that the development of context-aware services for mobile phones which often take the user, her situation and location into account. But why not use these devices for interactions with the real world, as a mediator between the virtual and the user’s world? While certain research domains within the fields of mobile applications and services advance at an amazing speed (e.g. context-aware services on mobile devices, using sensors in mobile phones), the areas of pervasive mobile user interfaces, mobile devices as interaction devices, mobile devices for interactions with the physical world and user experiences in this field are still rather limited."

Artful Integration: Interweaving Media, Materials and Practices (July 27-31, 2004 - Toronto, Canada)
"Participatory Design (PD) is a diverse collection of principles and practices aimed at making technologies and social institutions more responsive to human needs. A central tenet of PD is the direct involvement of people in the co-design of the (mainly computerized) systems they use. The Participatory Design Conferences, held every two years since 1990, have brought together a multidisciplinary and international group of software developers, researchers, social scientists, designers, activists, practitioners, users, citizens, cultural workers and managers who adopt distinctively participatory approaches in the development of information and communication artifacts, systems, services and technologies."

3rd International Conference for Interaction Design and Children (June 1-3, 2004 - Maryland, USA)
"In today's schools, homes, and public spaces, children are becoming frequent and experienced users of technology. As this trend continues, it is increasingly important to ask if we understand today's young people and can fulfill their technology needs. With this in mind, IDC 2004 will focus on addressing the challenges of interaction design for children and explore the opportunities and impact that new technologies can afford young people in their everyday lives."
